About Spring Valley

 

Spring Valley is in San Diego County, in the San Diego-Carlsbad metro area. The community is in the Pacific Standard time zone. The latitude of Spring Valley is 32.744N. The longitude is -116.998W. The population, at the time of the 2000 census, was 26,663. Spring Valley's name comes from a spring that attracted many different groups of settlers over thousands of years. The name officially became "Spring Valley" in 1866 by Rufus King Porter and his daughter. When the Porter family ranch was purchased, a variety of crops were planted, including raspberries, blackberries, olives, guavas and almonds. Spring Valley is the largest un-incorporated community in the county of San Diego, covering thirteen and a half square miles. Located 11 miles east of the city of San Diego, Spring Valley is bordered by La Mesa and El Cajon to the North, Jamul and Dulzura to the East, Sweetwater and Bonita to the South, and Paradise Hills and Lemon Grove to the West. Within Spring Valley's boundaries can be found a variety of smaller communities - Casa de Oro, Rancho San Diego, La Presa, Dictionary Hill, Mt. Helix, and Bancroft. Today it is dotted with condos and affordable homes to house its dense population of more than 100,000 residents.

Area Schools

San Diego City Schools (SDCS) serves nearly 133,000 students, and has marked more than 150 years of service to San Diego's children. It is the second largest district in California, and eighth largest urban district in the United States. The student population is extremely diverse, representing more than 15 ethnic groups and over 60 languages and dialects.The district’s focus on providing educational excellence and equity to all students has resulted in significant grant funding from private and public agencies, and other organizations supporting education. This includes a $17.5 million grant from the US Department of Education under its Striving Readers program – one of only eight grants given nationwide this year – and a $2.24 million grant from the California Department of Education to provide technology for science education at 12 district middle schools
