About San Diego

San Diego is a city in San Diego County. It is the county seat. The community is in the Pacific Standard time zone. The latitude of San Diego is 32.715N. The longitude is -117.156W. The estimated population, in 2003, was 1,266,753. San Diego is on San Diego Bay The community was named after San Diego (St. James) de Alcalá Long known for its naval bases and its mild climate. Charles Lindbergh's airplane, Spirit of St. Louis, was built here in 1927 Downtown San Diego is the heart of the county, with its towering buildings, interesting shops, tasty dining and exciting nightlife. Residents also enjoy many of the city's parks including Mission Bay Park and Mission Trails Regional Park. The hub of the area is the San Diego International Airport; Brown Field and Montgomery Field are two airports used for privately owned aircrafts.. It is the second largest city in California and the seventh largest in the United States. It lies just north of the Mexican border, and is a home for Navy and Marine Corps bases, many miles of beaches, and a mild marine climate. Annual mean temperature is 64.4 degrees Fahrenheit. San Diego's economy centers on tourism, trade, agriculture, ship-building, the military, biotechnology, computer science and electronics.The University of California at San Diego and nearby research institutes on Torrey Mesa provide a base for technological innovation and start-up companies in the area. The city draws tourists with beaches and bays, Balboa Park with its many museums, the San Diego Zoo, Sea World, San Diego Wild Animal Park (in Escondido, north of the city) and Old Town, the site of of the original Spanish settlement. Downtown San Diego is located on San Diego Bay. Coronado Island and Point Loma separate the bay from the ocean. Ocean Beach is on the west side of Point Loma. Mission Beach and Pacific Beach lie between the ocean and Mission Bay, a man-made aquatic park. La Jolla, an affluent community, lies north of Pacific Beach. Mount Soledad in La Jolla offers views from northern San Diego County to Mexico.Mountains rise to the east of the city, and beyond the mountains are desert areas. Cleveland National Forest is a half-hour drive from downtown San Diego. Numerous farms are found in the valleys northeast of the city. The city of San Diego itself has deep canyons separating its mesas, preventing the kind of continuous development seen in Los Angeles to the north.San Diego is a great place to live work, go to school, raise a family, and play. San Diego is rated one of the best places to live in the United States, no wonder millions call San Diego home.

Area Schools

San Diego City Schools (SDCS) serves nearly 133,000 students, and has marked more than 150 years of service to San Diego's children. It is the second largest district in California, and eighth largest urban district in the United States. The student population is extremely diverse, representing more than 15 ethnic groups and over 60 languages and dialects.The district’s focus on providing educational excellence and equity to all students has resulted in significant grant funding from private and public agencies, and other organizations supporting education. This includes a $17.5 million grant from the US Department of Education under its Striving Readers program – one of only eight grants given nationwide this year – and a $2.24 million grant from the California Department of Education to provide technology for science education at 12 district middle schools
