About San Diego

San Diego County is a county located on the Pacific Ocean in the far southwest of the U.S. state of California, along its border with Mexico. With a population of 3,051,280 (as of 2005), it is the third largest county by population in the state. San Diego is home to countless attractions and fixtures including the World Famous San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Wild Animal Park, Sea World, Balboa Park, Qualcomm Stadium, and the Gaslamp Quarter. Downtown San Diego is the heart of the county, with its towering buildings, interesting shops, tasty dining and exciting nightlife. Residents also enjoy many of the city's parks including Mission Bay Park and Mission Trails Regional Park. The hub of the area is the San Diego International Airport; Brown Field and Montgomery Field are two airports used for privately owned aircrafts. The county seat is the city of San Diego. European settlement in what is now San Diego County began with the founding of the Mission San Diego de Alcala by the Spanish, in 1769. San Diego County was one of the original counties of California, and was created at the time of statehood in 1850. It was named after San Diego Bay, which had been rechristened in 1602 by Sebastián Vizcaíno in honor of the Franciscan St. Didacus of Alcalá, known in Spanish as San Diego de Alcalá de Henares, and whose name was borne by Vizcaíno's flagship. Parts of the county were later divided off to create Riverside County, in 1893, and Imperial County, in 1907. The county was named by explorer Don Sebastian Vizcaino for his favorite saint, San Diego de Alcala Of nation's counties, ranks No. 10 in production of strawberries. http://sdpublic.sdcounty.ca.gov/ - Other helpful information
