About Kailua
Kailua is one of the largest cities on the island
of Oahu with an area of 35.5 square miles. It
is located north of Honolulu along the eastern
coast at Kailua Bay. Kailua means “two seas”
due to the peninsula that divides the bay. The
Castle Medical Center is located within the city,
as is the Kona International Airport at Keahole.
Residents enjoy the Akona Kai Shopping Mall, the
Kona Coast Shopping Center and the World Square
Plaza Shopping Center. The Hulihee Palace State
Monument, Hillcrest Park, Beans Beach and Alula
Beach are draws as well. The area is mostly residential,
with its inhabitants enjoying the Kailua Beach
Park, Lanikai Beach and Kawai Nui Marsh. Kailua
was ranked as the number one beach in the US in
1998. Kailua is also home to the Marine Corps
Base Hawaii.
