About Point Loma
Point Loma.Thousands of years ago, Indians lived where Point
Loma stands today. Interestingly, the Point Loma peninsula was
the first land in California spotted by Spaniards at sea in the
1500's, and Ballast Point was where the ship first landed. What
used to be a Spanish fort, made of adobe in the late 1700's, (and
once called Fort Rosecrans) is now the Naval Base Point Loma as
of 1998. The Old Point Loma Lighthouse is a landmark as well.
Some of the points of interest in the area include the Point Loma
Nazarine University and the Sunset Cliffs Natural Park. Liberty
Station is a brand new community built in place of the Naval Training
Station in 2000. About 63,000 live in any of Point Loma's other
12 communities: Centraloma, College Area, Fleetridge, La Playa,
Loma Portal, Midway District, Ocean Beach, Point Loma Heights,
Roseville, Sunset Cliffs, Wooded Acres and Woods.
