About Westminster
Westminster was just another agricultural community
until WWII when the farms were replaced with shipyards and aircraft
factories. Ample housing opportunities in the area was a strong
draw for workers in the Los Angeles area; Westminster's population
steadily increased following its incorporation as an Orange County
city in the late 50's. Today, Westminster is known as "Little
Saigon" and is home to the largest Vietnamese population in the
US. The Westminster Mall is also a popular destination for residents.
Area Schools
Grades K - 8: Westminster
School District
The Westminster School district provides 12 elementary and 2 middle
schools to the cities of Garden Grove, Midway City, Huntington
Beach, and Westminster. The district has 10,000 students and about
1,300 employees. The schools in WSD have been named National Blue
Ribbon Schools, as well as receiving various awards for academic
and educational excellence.
Ocean View School District
Ocean View School District currently has eleven elementary schools
for students in grades K - 5 and four middle schools to serve
the needs of our 6 - 8 students. The District encompasses 15 square
miles in the northern half of Huntington Beach, and also serves
a small number of students in Westminster, Fountain Valley and
Midway City. The past few years have seen outstanding academic
growth in student achievement. High school students are served
by Huntington Beach Union High School District.
Garden Grove Unified School District
The Garden Grove Unified School District spans the cities of Garden Grove, Westminster, Fountain Valley, and Santa Ana. The Board of Education is committed to providing an educational program focusing on student achievement, high standards, and opportunities for all students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to live a productive life. The district strives to ensure that all students have the opportunity upon leaving high school to choose from a wide variety of options including four-year colleges and universities, technical education, or a skilled career. The opportunity to choose among these paths requires that students achieve proficiency as defined by state standards in core academic subjects and achieve proficiency in the use of the English language. These proficiencies will make it possible for students to access rigorous high school courses and enable them to graduate ready for college and skilled careers.
Huntington Beach Unified High School District
The HBUHSD serves the communities of Huntington Beach, Westminster, Fountain Valley, and Ocean View. The first high school in the area was founded in 1903 and during the past 90 years the district maintained a strong commitment to education which has provided a rich tradition of athletic and educational success for students. In recent years, the district has been praised by Newsweek Magazine and the Los Angeles Times for its commitment to academic excellence. The most recent SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) scores for district students reflect a ten-year growth pattern with the average score for the Class of 1993 being 81 points above the national average and 84 points above the state average. Scores on the ACT (American College Test) are 15 percent above the national average. Highly successful advanced placement courses exist at each school; alternative programs provide rich opportunities for other students, and the Special Abilities Cluster and Special Day Classes have been acknowledged as exemplary in meeting the needs of special education students.
