About La Palma
La Palma is the smallest city in Orange County
at only 1.76 square miles. La Palma was meant to be a purely agricultural
and livestock oriented community; however today, what was once
called "Dairyland" is now home to 16,000 people with no agriculture
at all. The City prides itself on their community based events
such as the Easter Fantasy Children's Carnival, Halloween Carnival,
and La Palma Days which includes a carnival, live music and parade.
Area Schools
K-6th Grade: Anaheim City
School District
Anaheim City's 23 schools serve a population of about 23,000 students
from kindergarten through sixth grade, making ACSD one of the
largest elementary districts in California. All schools in the
district are on four-track, year-round schedules. The area is
known for its diversity, with approximately 63 percent are English
learners. ACSD has more than 2,000 employees, with teachers practicing
standards-based instruction, utilizing student support programs,
and using a coordinated curriculum. The district is making strides
to improve their academic performance; In the 2002 / 2003 school
year, 22 schools met their school wide and subject targets.
Cypress School District
The Cypress School District is in an area of approximately six
square miles in northwestern Orange County, California, providing
quality educational experiences for children in grades kindergarten
through grade six. The District incorporates small portions of
both La Palma and Buena Park, as well as Cypress. Students in
the ten elementary schools in the district consistently score
at least two years above grade level and exceed national and state
averages on standardized tests in basic skill areas. Cypress maintains
small class and school sizes and the teachers average 15 years
experience in the district.
Centralia School District
Centralia School District was established in 1875 and was the
first school district in California to provide free textbooks
to students. Today, the district's 9 elementary schools are in
the neighboring cities of Buena Park, Anaheim, and La Palma. Enrollment
is approximately 5,100 students. The schools provide a balanced
curriculum of language arts (reading, writing, listening, speaking,
and spelling), mathematics, science, history/social science, physical
education, health, and visual/performing arts. These curricular
areas include handwriting, geography, and government. The District
has "Content and Performance Standards" which list specific skills
that students are expected to master at each grade level. These
standards are aligned with the State's academic standards.
7th-12th Grade: Anaheim
Union High School District
The Anaheim Union High School District has an impressive 95% graduation
rate and a population of almost 37,000. The district was founded
over a century ago in 1898, and includes the cities of Anaheim,
Buena Park, Cypress, Garden Grove, La Palma, Orange and Stanton.
This area is known for its diversity as its population speaks
over fifty different languages. AUHSD has another reason to be
proud; the district is home to the second highest API scoring
school in the state. Many of these schools are California Distinguished
Schools and have received Golden Bell Awards and Golden State
Exam awards.
