About Huntington Beach

Huntington Beach is one of the largest cities in Orange County, with nearly 200,000 residents. This surf community is well known for the OP Pro, an annual surfing contest, as well as its historic pier (the Huntington Beach Pier), surf shops, and coastal dining. Some of the city's most popular beaches include the Huntington City Beach, the Bolsa Chica State Beach, Dog Beach, and the Huntington State Beach. Residents and visitors take advantage of "Surf City" appeal by enjoying beach volleyball, ocean kayaking, evening bonfires, boogie boarding, fishing, skate boarding and the well-known Grunion Run, which occurs yearly between March and August. Huntington Beach has changed a lot since its days as a polluted oil town; it now hosts Orange County's only beach marathon (the Pacific Shoreline Marathon), The Huntington Beach Playhouse, The International Surf Museum, the Pro Beach Volleyball Tournament, free summer concerts and the Bolsa Chica Wetlands which serves as a bird and wildlife refuge. Events for the kids are favorites as well; the Huck Finn Fishing Derby is held annually.

Area Schools

Grades K-8: Huntington Beach City School District
The Huntington Beach City School District was established in 1905 and encompasses approximately 14 square miles within the city of Huntington Beach and unincorporated portions of Orange County (Bolsa Chica). It currently operates eight elementary schools and two middle schools with about nearly 700 employees serving about 6,000 students. Construction of the new Huntington Seacliff Elementary School was completed for the opening of the 1999-2000 school year. Huntington Beach City School District takes pride in all its students and embraces children from all cultures. Presently, the population is composed of 76.9% White, 10.9% Hispanic, and 9.2% Asian students, with the remainder being of African American, American Indian, Pacific Islander and Filipino heritage.

Westminster School District
The Westminster School district provides 12 elementary and 2 middle schools to the cities of Garden Grove, Midway City, Huntington Beach, and Westminster. The district has 10,000 students and about 1,300 employees. The schools in WSD have been named National Blue Ribbon Schools, as well as receiving various awards for academic and educational excellence.

Ocean View School District
Ocean View School District currently has eleven elementary schools for students in grades K - 5 and four middle schools to serve the needs of our 6 - 8 students. The District encompasses 15 square miles in the northern half of Huntington Beach, and also serves a small number of students in Westminster, Fountain Valley and Midway City. The past few years have seen outstanding academic growth in student achievement. High school students are served by Huntington Beach Union High School District.

Los Alamitos Unified School District
The schools of the Los Alamitos Unified School District are National Blue Ribbon Schools, California Distinguished Schools, and have received Golden Bell Awards. A culture of high student achievement and integrity will be the hallmark of the district. Students thrive in a caring, respectful, and encouraging environment where they are physically and emotionally safe to focus on learning. The Board, all staff, students, parents, and community will work together to improve the academic performance of all students by responding to their individual learning needs. Teachers utilize a challenging, relevant, and balanced curriculum, so that students will acquire the skills, knowledge, values, and experiences to succeed in their personal and professional lives, to continue their learning for a lifetime, and to contribute as citizens in a democratic society.

9-12 Grade: Huntington Beach Unified High School District
The HBUHSD serves the communities of Huntington Beach, Westminster, Fountain Valley, and Ocean View. The first high school in the area was founded in 1903 and during the past 90 years the district maintained a strong commitment to education which has provided a rich tradition of athletic and educational success for students. In recent years, the district has been praised by Newsweek Magazine and the Los Angeles Times for its commitment to academic excellence. The most recent SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) scores for district students reflect a ten-year growth pattern with the average score for the Class of 1993 being 81 points above the national average and 84 points above the state average. Scores on the ACT (American College Test) are 15 percent above the national average. Highly successful advanced placement courses exist at each school; alternative programs provide rich opportunities for other students, and the Special Abilities Cluster and Special Day Classes have been acknowledged as exemplary in meeting the needs of special education students.
