About Buena Park
Buena Park is home to Orange County's other theme
park: Knott's Berry Farm. The amusement park was originally devised
as a distraction for customers waiting for Cordelia Knott's chicken
dinners (a side project developed from the family's first berry
stand). Today, Knott's Berry Farm is the largest source of revenue
for the city. Buena Park was first urbanized by a grocer from
Chicago in the late 1800's, but didn't become a city until 1953.
It was originally a dairy center, but today hosts attractions
such as Medieval Times and Movieland Wax Museum.
Area Schools
K-6th Grade: Cypress School
District
The Cypress School District is in an area of approximately six
square miles in northwestern Orange County, California, providing
quality educational experiences for children in grades kindergarten
through grade six. The District incorporates small portions of
both La Palma and Buena Park, as well as Cypress. Students in
the ten elementary schools in the district consistently score
at least two years above grade level and exceed national and state
averages on standardized tests in basic skill areas. Cypress maintains
small class and school sizes and the teachers average 15 years
experience in the district.
Grades K-6: Savanna School
District
Savanna School District, encompassing parts of the cities of Anaheim,
Buena Park, Cypress and Stanton, is an elementary school district
with approximately 2400 students. These students are housed in
four locations: Cerritos School, Hansen School, Holder School
and Twila Reid School. The district size is about four square
miles with each elementary school located within one mile of another.
The small district size means that Savanna has a family-like atmosphere
among the faculty, support staff, students, parents and the community.
Providing a learning environment and a strong academic program
that focuses on reading, writing, and mathematics is the primary
goal of the Savanna School District.
K-Intermediate School: Buena
Park School District
The District presently consists of six elementary schools and
one junior high school serving 6,100 students. The average class
size is 25 students. The district provides the following programs:
CBET Community Based English Tutoring, ELL English Language Learner
Program, GATE, GOAL, Standards Based Report Card, Promotion and
Retention Program, Accelerated Reader Program, and the School
Readiness Program.
Centralia School District
Centralia School District was established in 1875 and was the
first school district in California to provide free textbooks
to students. Today, the district's 9 elementary schools are in
the neighboring cities of Buena Park, Anaheim, and La Palma. Enrollment
is approximately 5,100 students. The schools provide a balanced
curriculum of language arts (reading, writing, listening, speaking,
and spelling), mathematics, science, history/social science, physical
education, health, and visual/performing arts. These curricular
areas include handwriting, geography, and government. The District
has "Content and Performance Standards" which list specific skills
that students are expected to master at each grade level. These
standards are aligned with the State's academic standards.
Anaheim City
School District
Anaheim City's 23 schools serve a population of about 23,000 students
from kindergarten through sixth grade, making ACSD one of the
largest elementary districts in California. All schools in the
district are on four-track, year-round schedules. The area is
known for its diversity, with approximately 63% English learners
in the district. ACSD has more than 2,000 employees, with teachers
practicing standards-based instruction, utilizing student support
programs, and using a coordinated curriculum. The district is
making strides to improve their academic performance; In the 2002
/ 2003 school year, 22 schools met their school wide and subject
targets.
Anaheim Union High School District
The Anaheim Union High School District has an impressive 95% graduation
rate and a population of almost 37,000. The district was founded
over a century ago in 1898, and includes the cities of Anaheim,
Buena Park, Cypress, Garden Grove, La Palma, Orange and Stanton.
This area is known for its diversity as its population speaks
over fifty different languages. AUHSD has another reason to be
proud; the district is home to the second highest API scoring
school in the state. Many of these schools are California Distinguished
Schools and have received Golden Bell Awards and Golden State
Exam awards.
Fullerton Joint High School District
The Fullerton Joint Union High School District was founded in
1893 and serves grades 9-12. It serves a fifty-square-mile area
that includes the elementary districts of Buena Park, Fullerton,
La Habra and Lowell Joint. A comprehensive summer school program
is offered each year. The District's school year consists of 180
instructional days of 372 minutes each. The District serves a
varied socioeconomic population of families. Active parent organizations,
an involved business community and supportive higher education
institutions are enjoyed by the District.
