La Puente is a city in Los Angeles County, in the Los Angeles-Long
Beach metro area. The community is in the Pacific Standard time
zone. The latitude of La Puente is 34.02N. The longitude is -117.948W.
The estimated population, in 2003, was 42,143. La Puente is in
the San Gabriel Valley. The community name derives from Spanish
for "bridge" Former and merged community names include:
Puente. Fruit- and walnut-growing region in the 1930s. Today,
as with much of aging suburbia throughout Greater Los Angeles,
blue-collar Latinos form much of the population in La Puente.
Redevelopment of the business districts in La Puente have been
ongoing. However, the local government has been relatively unsuccessful
in its attempts to attract big-box retailers and restaurant chains,
as such businesses have gone to adjacent West Covina, California.
