La Mesa is a city in San Diego County, in the San Diego-Carlsbad metro area. The community is in the Pacific Standard time zone. The latitude of La Mesa is 32.767N. The longitude is -117.022W. The estimated population, in 2003, was 54,571. The community name derives from Spanish for "tableland".At the turn of the century, the city now known as La Mesa was being developed as an artist's community, and was home to famous authors and performers of the time. By the 1920's the area was becoming an agricultural center, growing lemons and avocados. Today, La Mesa is home to 2 thriving communities: Grossmont and Mount Helix. The Grossmont Center and the La Mesa Springs shopping center are favorite destinations of San Diegans and Downtown La Mesa and the newly built Ray and Joan Kroc Community Center are popular for residents as well.
