Smart watches are slowly but surely taking over their contemporary counterparts with the passage of time as technology advances and putting more features on a smaller chip becomes possible. The Apple Watch may be the best smart watch to buy but where did it all start? What was the tipping point for the search for the best smart watches?
While the idea of smart-wearable devices has been around for 50 – 60 years, even before that in the form of sci-fi movies and comics. Developers have always tried to combine cutting edge technology with everyday life and since the inception of electronic devices, have succeeded in doing so.
Pulsar NL C01
Before the Apple Watch, the Samsung Smart Gear, and Motorola’s own version, there was Pulsar NL C01, all the way back in 1982. This was a time when the computing world was quick evolving and breakthroughs had made it possible to compress the size of processors. Pulsar, a brand of Sieko introduced the NL C01, which sounds nothing less than a robotic prototype in 1982 in its bid to revolutionize the e-industry. While it didn’t hold the juice like many of today’s creations, it was the best smart watch to buy at that time holding 24 bits. This was just the beginning.
After a string of refurbishments and refinements came the RC-1000 that had greater on board storage and whole lot more functions. Released in 1984, the RC-1000 could be synchronized through a data cable and could be connected to a computer. It had 2 KB of RAM which was a lot by 80s’ standards! By that time however, the technological world had embraced the reality of smart-wear and was actively working to enhance it.
Seiko’s previous creations become the best smart watches in the market and ruled until 1990 when once again the company lead innovation. It developed and introduced the Seiko Receptor that could wirelessly connect to a device. This was the first time when such a small device had such a sophisticated connectivity option.
In 1998, once again Seiko brought change to the definition of the best smartwatch in the market. The Sieko Ruputer was known as the OnHand PC and could do much more than imagined. It had a 16 bit processor, 128 KB RAM and an LCD display. So at that time it was considered as the first step to smart devices. You could even write apps for the phone in C language!
By the year 2000, companies like Apple, Samsung and Microsoft had started taking note of these advancements. Microsoft was the first one to enter the market with its SPOT smartwatch. The smartwatches came with all the regular features but in addition could also update subscribers with data from major US cities.
The project wasn’t a success and had to be closed by 2012.
Samsung S9110 Watch Phone
This was the one that made it all happen, after the release of this smart watch/phone, the idea became widespread. The S9110 was the first major smart watch to have a Bluetooth connection. It had a long lasting battery, better display and was much “smarter” than its predecessors.
After the inception of this smart watch, companies like FitBit entered the market and set the stage for smart fitness-apparel as well. Now, in 2016 the smart watch industry has developed to such an extend that one can’t even cope with the growth that’s spurred in such a short time.
